MAJOR PROPERTIES OF ELEMENTS
An element is a substance which contains only one kind of atom. It has been found possible to resolve all known substances into about 109 elements: many of these elements are rare, and relatively few arc common in nature. Each of them is very important because they compose all the materials found on the earth.
Elements have properties distinguishing them from other substances. Some of these properties are their colour, hardness, odour, taste, density, solubility in liquids, their ability to conduct electricity, and others. All these properties can help to distinguish one element from another.
Sugar, starch, cellulose, wood and paper, for example, differ from one another in many ways, but each of these substances is composed of the same three elements: carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
Oxygen is the most abundant element on our planet. Because of its chemical properties, it has been called the most important of all elements to man. It is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas, slightly heavier than air and is slightly soluble in water.
Some elements have been found occurring either in the rocks and water which make up the Earthacute;s surface or in the air around us; others are so active that they are never found free at all. Some elements have been produced artificially and it is not known for certain whether they exist in nature or not. Among the elements there are solids (gold, silver, carbon, sulphur), liquids (mercury, bromine) and gases (oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen).
All pure metals are elements. On the other hand, comparatively few of the elements are non-metals, and many of these are gases.
